For a Sophisticated Sportsman

The Design Challenge

What creative interior design solution addresses a wife’s desire for white on white while allowing her husband to show off his hunting trophies?  In light of the fact that the couple has three young boys and a dog, Jennifer Horstman of Lenox Home Design had her work cut out for her.  Given these challenges, and working with the beautiful coastal cottage style designed by David Charlez Designs, she expertly transitioned this home in to one fit for a sophisticated sportsman. On the whole this home provides a space that combines functionality, durability and personality.

Opposites AttractFront entry hunter green accents

First, the design team infused color in to the white-on-white decor with accents such as Hunter Green, Dark Blues and Metallic.  For example, a one-of-a-kind green and black tiled bathroom off the guest room provides an oasis of calm.

Second, the use of reclaimed beams nods to the husband’s need for a rustic look .  Likewise, wood walls in the lower level family room come from Kentucky tobacco barns (harking to the husband’s family’s racehorses).

Third, the use of plants throughout the home provide a sense of life, layers and texture.

Finally, wallcovering creates dimension, with hunter green lizard skin in the front entry, abstract patterning in the powder bath to feathers and flowers in the two laundry rooms.

Design meets function

Equally important to the design decor for the homeowners is functionality.  Custom cabinetry is carefully crafted for everything from knives to toothbrushes. Furthermore, Crypton upholstery fabrics on all the furniture will wear well with young children and pets.  Most importantly, the boys can let off steam in the families’ sport court.  Hockey or basketball anyone?  Last but not least, a specially designed gun room, along with integrated safe door (not shown in pictures for privacy) balances out the yin and yang design style with the families’ needs and wants within the home.

Heart of home

Above all, White kitchenthe heart of the home is truly the kitchen – with dramatic high ceilings, double islands, open concept and attached pantry. Function continues to the dining room’s floor which is an easily washed ombre tile pattern that feathers into a custom stained white oak floor. The hearth room which sits on the other side of the double fireplace from the dining room creates a convenient space for morning cartoons or late evening bourbon drinking.

A Winning team of experts

This coastal cottage for a sophisticated sportsman is the second home Todd Simning of Kroiss Development  masterfully built for this client. This is due to the solid, life-long relationships he fosters.  Todd’s expertise includes creating winning teams that are integral to the success of the project and start on day one.  Once construction begins, everyone is on the same page ensuring the project goes more smoothly.

Pantries are trending on Houzz, and these spaces present a delicious design opportunity through their doors. Some of these doors conceal a large walk-in pantry, while others announce the presence of a much smaller pantry cabinet.
Custom cabinetry doors, sliding barn doors, pocket doors and a range of eclectic choices are good options that will add personality and a style statement to the kitchen.

In Kroiss’ kitchen (third slide), things aren’t quite so concealed; the homeowner wanted to be able to see into her pantry from the main kitchen when making up her shopping list. Glass on the door, a glass transom and a window inside the pantry keep it well-lit naturally, while ash paneling, baskets and attractive shelves provide a nice view. But the way the door is lined up with the other cabinets still adds a bit of mystery at first.
